Free Pattern: Cell Phone Strap

Our phones are nearly inseparable from us. Whether we are taking photos, keeping up on life events, reading the news, or playing Wordle…it is hard to imagine a time that our phones weren’t within a few feet of us at all times.

When I am somewhere where I know I will be taking a lot of pictures, like a quilt show or theme park, I get nervous taking my phone in and out of my bag all the time.

I saw this idea in an ad for a photographer's bag and thought it was great for those places where we want our phone at the ready but would be a REALLY bad place to lose it…

This handmade cell phone strap can clip onto anything and you have your phone at the ready for any memory you want to capture quickly!

Supplies:

  • Scrap Materials (Recommended Materials: Denim, Faux Leather, Cork, Quilting Cottons)

    • 2” x 8” for 1” swivel hooks

    • 1 ½” x 8” for ¾” swivel hooks

  • Interfacing for Woven Fabrics (Recommend Pellon SF101)

    • 2” x 8” for 1” swivel hooks

    • 1 ½” x 8” for ¾” swivel hooks

  • Two Swivel Hooks (1” or ¾”)

  • Small Rivets (optional)

  • Polyester Thread

  • Scissors

  • Marking Tool

  • Clips

  • Rotary Punch

  • Cell Phone Tether

Step 1:

Take your 2” x 8” piece and fold in ½” on each long edge. Press into place. Tip: You can make it as long as you would like for your purposes.

Note: If using quilting cottons or denim, interfacing is recommended. Pellon SF101 works perfectly. In the below image, you will notice my interfacing is slightly shorter than my strap fabric. Don’t do what I do. Ha. I was testing this, but would recommend fully interfacing that piece from top to bottom.

Step 2:

Topstitch down each long edge of the strap. I usually stitch ⅛” in and then ¼” in along each long edge for additional reinforcement.

On woven fabrics, I zig zag stitch the short ends to prevent any fraying.

Step 3:

Slide your strap through your swivel hooks and fold over about 1”. Mark your preference for rivet placement.

I recommend using a Rotary Punch for creating the rivet holes, especially when using thicker fabrics. It works like a champ.

Note: You can skip rivets and sew the strap closed with a box stitch as well.

Step 4:

Insert rivets and you are done! This is a super easy peasy project and creates a great accessory for all ages and events.

I can’t wait to see how you use your phone strap! Send me pics and share on social media! #sewdreamyphonestrap
