Free Pattern: Hot Traveler
I truly love to travel and it is rare that I travel without my curling iron… or flat iron… or both.
Last year when we were planning a trip abroad, I knew I needed a way to carry my hot hair utensils while they were still warm and not worry about anything in my suitcase melting. So, alas, this little pattern was born!
This pattern is a great scrap buster. You can make it look coordinated with matching fabrics, or use different fabrics for all pieces and make it truly unique!
Step 1: CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
Exterior Fabric: Cut each 16” x 13” section from each fat quarter and the Bosal Poly-Therm.
Pocket: Cut 13” x 6” piece from one fat quarter
Binding: Cut (3) 2 ¼” strips from remaining fat quarter (need 45” of binding)
Note: If using a directional fabric, note that the 16” measurement is the height of the finished project.
Step 2: QUILTING
Quilt the Exterior 16” x 13” sections any way you desire.
Note: The shiny side of the Bosal Poly-Therm should face TOWARDS the lining. This is what reflects the heat from your curling iron or flat iron.
Step 3: PREPARING EXTERIOR PIECES
Cut (2) 15” x 6” sections from your quilted piece
Step 4: TOP FINISHING OF EXTERIOR PIECES
Zig zag stitch the top of the cut sections.
Foldover 1” and stitch down
Note: I stitch twice because I like the look, you can stitch once if you prefer.
Step 5: EXTERIOR POCKET, Part 1
Fold cut pocket piece in half horizontally, piece should be 6 ½” x 6”
Press and topstitch pocket
Step 6: EXTERIOR POCKET, Part 2
Place the pocket on one exterior piece and baste in place
Step 7: BAG ASSEMBLY
Place exterior pieces linings sides together, clip and zig zag stitch together
Step 8: BINDING
(If you haven’t already made your binding, this is the time to do it. Here is a great tutorial if you are new to binding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZR6ls_IsIo)
Before clipping your binding onto the project, fold over the short unfinished edge by ½” so you have a folded edge aligning with the top edge of your project.
Sew down your binding along all zigzag edges.
Once you get about 1” from the final top edge, stop sewing.
Trim your remaining binding with about ½” to spare and fold that under like you did the first side. Once clipped, finish sewing your binding into place.
Flip your binding over the front of your project, clip and stitch into place.
Note: You do not need a bias binding for this project.
Note #2: Machine finishing your binding can get FUNKY. I clip like crazy, but you can also baste with glue, so you get a nice evenly sewn binding. I also prefer to place the unsewn side of the binding on the bed of my machine and stitch in the ditch along my folded over binding.
